18 | Progressive Grocer Independent | August 2016 O ne of the most important decisions an indepen- dent retailer can make is whom they partner with to supply their supermarkets. Joining forces is the only way to compete with the buy- ing power of the chains. In 1959, 27 Piggly Wiggly store owners did exactly that: ey joined together to form the Piggly Wiggly Alabama Distributing Co. (PWADC), a warehouse that supplied grocery products and made deliveries with one semi truck and two bobtail trucks. In the ensuing half- century, PWADC has grown beyond selling just groceries to include produce, meat, bakery/deli, health and beauty and general merchandise, private label brands, and a dollar program to compete against the popular dollar stores, as well as a variety of services like retail systems, accounting, advertising and store engineering. Piggly Wiggly Alabama Distributing Co. Piggly Wiggly Alabama Distributing Co. is continuously upping services for its retail owners. By Katie Martin N E X T L E V E L N E X T L E V E L
