Events Industry 22 | Progressive Grocer Independent | April 2016 At the conclusion of the IGA 90 th An- niversary Diamond Celebration, IGA announced that longtime chairman Dr. Tom Haggai was to become chair- man emeritus, effective April 1. IGA President and CEO Mark Batenic will become chairman of IGA at that time. In 1972, Haggai was appointed to the IGA board as its first nonindustry member. He had spoken at several national conventions since the 1960s. In 1975, he was named nonexecutive chairman before becoming president and CEO in 1986, when he led an ef- fort to organize the company more effectively and build a system-wide image of higher quality and service, as well as developing the Red Oval Family Partner program, an alliance of the industry's premier food manu- facturers and service providers. IGA HONORS During its 90 th Anniversary Diamond Celebration, IGA named four independent retailers from around the world as 2016 IGA International Retailers of the Year. Based on IGA's globally applied standards, the Retailers of the Year have achieved exemplary excellence in retailing and the advancement of the IGA brand. Tyler Myers, (pictured, wearing medal) of Juneau Foodland IGA, in Juneau, Alaska, was named IGA USA International Retailer of the Year. He's the second-generation president and CEO of Te Myers Group, which operates six IGA stores in the Pacifc Northwest. Myers purchased the Juneau store in 2012 and undertook a remodel that added 13,600 square feet and included an ACE Hardware, a pharmacy and expanded grocery departments. Te now 57,696-square-foot store has seen a 45 percent increase in sales and a 30 percent increase in customer count. Nick and Spero Chapley, of Frewville Foodland IGA, in Frewville, South Australia, received the 2016 IGA Australia International Re- tailer of the Year award. Te 2016 IGA China International Retailer of the Year is Shiquan Shen, of Ximay Homay Business Co., in Xinyang, China. Martin Dorville, Super J IGA, Choc Estate, in Castries, Saint Lucia, was named the 2016 IGA Caribbean International Retailer of the Year. IGA named three recipients of the J. Frank Grimes Award, IGA's highest honor, which recognizes outstanding service to IGA and is given to those who exhibit the principles, passion and charisma of IGA founder J. Frank Grimes. This year's recipients were John Mayer, corporate VP of the J.M. Smucker Co.; Larry Higdon, president of Higdon Grocery Co.; and Mary Helen Potts, longtime executive as- sistant to IGA Chairman Dr. Tom Haggai. Higdon (near right, pictured center) is the third generation to work in his family's whole- sale business, which is celebrating 50 years as an IGA LDC. Mayer (far right, pictured center), who began his career with J.M. Smucker more than 35 years ago, made his first sales calls on IGA stores in Ohio and acted as the company representative for IGA's Red Oval Family for 15 years. Potts (not pictured) has worked with Haggai for 47 years and is in charge of scheduling, global and domestic projects, alliance memberships, and manage- ment of IGA's North Carolina office.
